ViridiScreen is a very sensitive and, importantly, robust alpha detection system, which uses the measurement of photons derived from the interaction of alpha particles with nitrogen in the air to determine the gross alpha activity on a surface. We are delighted that Sellafield Ltd has chosen to trial the use of ViridiScreen for a particularly challenging application on site. Kym and John have trained a member of Sellafield staff to use ViridiScreen in preparation for the work.

Viridian Consultants has been working closely with Lynton Lasers Ltd, a British-based company specialising in the manufacturer and supply of aesthetic, surgical and conservation lasers. By turning the laser light through 90^o we are able to use ViridiScope to take samples down pipes and round corners where access is difficult with conventional sampling tools.

It is funded through Innovate UK, designed to develop nuclear characterisation tools capable of remotely accessing confined spaces. Previous deployments of ViridiScope on nuclear sites have been carried out by engineers from Viridian Consultants who are experts in the operation of the laser sampler and in situ radiometric equipment. The laser sampler will be used at the Trawsfynydd decommissioning power station for the collection of material as part of their ongoing nuclear characterisation programme. In addition to the sampling tool, the contract includes radiometric counting equipment for in situ measurement of radioactivity in the material collected.
