A novel remote deployment of ViridiScope®

The most recent demonstration of our laser sampling tool was on a pond wall at the NNL Non-Active Rig Hall

  • Posted On: 8 October 2018
A novel remote deployment of ViridiScope® The challenge was to sample a pond wall from above, in a situation where it was not possible to use a robot. The answer was an extendable pole that was lowered down to the sampling point. The question was ‘how will we know the sampling head is in contact with the wall when we are sampling?’ The answer is easy. The sampling head has proximity sensors designed to control the laser power for safety reasons: if the head moves away from the surface, the laser cuts out. So, unless the head is in...

ViridiScan® successfully demonstrated on a nuclear site!

Our latest nuclear characterisation tool, ViridiScan®, has been demonstrated successfully in front of an invited audience of nuclear experts

ViridiScan® successfully demonstrated on a nuclear site! Characterisation experts from site licence companies, the NDA and representatives from contractors working for the nuclear industry attended demonstrations of our new tool on site at Sellafield and in NNL’s Rig Hall, Workington.  We were delighted to show them how we can collect concrete with our laser sampling tool, ViridiScope®, and, within minutes, produce a solution suitable for analysis by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This latest of our in situ analysis...

The first on-site demonstration of ViridiScan® will take place at Sellafield

ViridiScan® will be put through its paces for the first time on a nuclear site at Sellafield in September, followed by a second demonstration at the NNL Non-Active Rig Hall in Workington

The first on-site demonstration of ViridiScan® will take place at Sellafield ViridiScan® is a highly innovative instrumental solution for on-site in-situ materials characterisation.  Our novel approach uses a laser to remove surface material, which is transported to a sample collection pod in a safe area, located up to 20 metres away, where it will be processed and analysed in-situ by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry – a powerful tool for isotopic analysis. This will avoid the need to transport samples across site or even off site for analysis,...

ViridiScreen® in first active trial on a nuclear site

ViridiScreen a sensitive and, importantly, robust alpha detection system, which uses the measurement of photons derived from the interaction of alpha particles with nitrogen in the air, to determine the gross alpha activity on a surface

ViridiScreen® in first active trial on a nuclear site

Feedback from the successful trial was very positive, with stakeholders saying that the very simple design had the advantage to potentially be tweaked, making it smaller or sacrificial.  ViridiScreen’s simplicity of design and output could be an advantage for very specific scenarios, such as monitoring inside scaffolding poles, where size is critical.

Successful conclusion to deployment of ViridiScope on five sites

The deploymentof ViridiScope under our 'First of a Kind Deployment' project has come to an end

Successful conclusion to deployment of ViridiScope on five sites

At the end of June we successfully completed our last trial deployment of ViridiScope - on Hinkley Point B. Temperatures in Somerset soared to 30 degrees in the week when we were working in two pairs of coveralls and rubber gloves. It was quite a contrast to working in the 'Beast from the East' earlier in the year! The characterisation was completed in a week, demonstrating the 'faster' aspects of our innovative tool.
