The ANSIC pilot was developed to enable the UK to harness new and advanced nuclear technologies (ANTs), recognised in the government’s Energy White Paper and Ten Point Plan to meet net zero by 2050.
The showcase is set to highlight industry and academia collaborations enabled by ANSIC, including Viridian’s feasibility study to enable activities typically carried out in research reactors to be conducted within advanced nuclear reactors without affecting primary reactor operations for power generation.
Viridian has produced a report for BEIS and NNL, entitled ‘Irradiation of materials in advanced nuclear reactors’. It reviews the production of isotopes for medical and industrial use, radiochemical tracers and other activation products in the next generation of nuclear reactors and identifies four innovative solutions worth further consideration.
